Curly Flat Lacuna Chardonnay 2013 (750ml)

APPEARANCE
Pale, golden straw.

BOUQUET
Laden with complex charm, this is pure Chardonnay from the get go. Aromatics of lychee blossom, sea breeze & gun smoke entwine with the richer citrus elements of white peach, grapefruit & lime which presents itself all within an overlaying savoury framework derivative of skin & lees contact.

PALATE
With a generous front palate there’s an initially mouth filling presence to the wine. Aromatics now become three dimensional characters on the palate with ripe white peach fleshy grapefruit citrus. Structure here is derived by phenolic extraction, while volume is provided by creamy savoury lees characters. In unison this allows for a palate that both grips and glides on a current of crisp acidity.

WINE: 'Lacuna' is a stylistically different Chardonnay to our regular Chardonnay.

Essentially, they are the two styles found in Burgundy - the home of the greatest Chardonnays in the world. One is the traditional barrel fermented style found in Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne and the other is Chablis which classically has less, if any, oak inputs.

The difference for us here is in the winery, not necessarily the vineyard - though, over time, at Curly Flat we may identify a particular block or combination of blocks, that are best suited to 'Lacuna'. Some years we could mature some of the 'Lacuna' in older, more neutral oak.  Some years may see no oak,  We may go to larger format barrels, such as 500 or 600 litres

We speak of 'Lacuna' as our approach to produce a Chardonnay that speaks more of the fruit and place, and hence requires a different approach in the winery, particularly in minimising overt influences of oak - in both fermentation and aging.  Time continues to tell us more, allowing us to let the seasons speak more purely for themselves.

VINEYARDS: Before we whole bunch pressed the Chardonnay we gently passed 30% of the fruit through rollers, which helped break up, not crush, the skins for greater phenolic extraction. From there we foot pressed (with waders on!) a further 18% to achieve a similar result before pressing off. Phenolics are found in the skins and define the essence of any wine grape, as they are what provide any given wine its colour, taste & mouthfeel. This is what we aiming to further coax from our Chardonnay grapes to not only bolster the fruit profile but more importantly, provide textural presence and structure for that fruit and natural acid to play out in the similar, yet quite different way that oak does.  Fermented in two thirds and stainless steel and one third flextank cube.  Rested on lees for 4 months, cross flow filtered and bottled November 2013.

CELLARING SUGGESTIONS
Still youthful and drinking well now, we expect bottle age will deliver greater savoury depth over time. With its vibrant acid line, we see an ultimate drinking window that will remain open until around 2018, perhaps longer. Philosophy: The impetus of the Lacuna label is to showcase our estate grown Chardonnay away from overt oak inputs. Although this release, and all previous Lacuna releases, are absent of oak, we may in the future employ older barrels (fourth or fifth use) in the same way that some Chablis producers choose to use old or ‘neutral’ oak. As we still seek both texture and structure in our Lacuna Chardonnay, currently we look solely to the grape itself to provide this. This is Curly Flat's unoaked chardonnay, by no means its second label, even less a wannabe sauvignon blanc; crisp, vibrant and insistent from the word go, its grapefruit/apple/white peach flavours are strung from the stainless steel wire of the wine's backbone. Drink to 2023.
