About the Curly Flat Western Pinot Noir

The first bottling of the Western Pinot Noir was in 2018.  Alongside its Central counterpart, fractions of the Western blocks were bottled separately to highlight their striking contrasts as well as their show their role in the main Estate blend.  The 1997 & 1998 blocks occupy the western boundary of our vineyard but are easterly in aspect resulting in reduced exposure to the afternoon sun, making them our coolest parcels of Pinot Noir.  Furthermore, parts of these vineyards share soils that are 430 million-years-old, consisting of ancient seafloor from the Upper Ordovician era.  Overall these factors combine to form wines of delicate fragrance,  powerful yet elegant fruit enveloped in dense yet supple talc-like textures.  While the western blocks have been a part of Curly Flat Estate blend since 2001, in isolation it is strikingly different from the blend or the Central Pinot Noir.  With vine ages of 23 and 24 years with Western blocks are comprised of Dijon clones 114 & 115.  See below for where the Western blocks are located in the vineyard and below further for more technical details on the 2018 Curly Flat Western Pinot Noir.
