“Pale smudgy crimson. Edgy, notes of green, very very youthful with real core. Spice and structure. Real density.”

“Clones 114 and 115; hand-picked, 100% whole bunches, 5-day cold soak, 29 days of pre, during and post fermentation, matured for 20 months in French oak (65% new). The light crimson colour is perfectly clear, an appropriate introduction for a delicately embroidered palate that, against the odds, has kept the oak impact under total control; red fruits dominate early on, but savoury/briary nuances on the finish provide a satisfying conclusion.”

“The colour is light and somewhat developed, and the appearance is almost thin. The bouquet is tremendously complex and far removed from a simple fruity pinot style. It’s ethereal, in the best sense of the word. Perfumed and lovely, with pot-pourri, faded flowers nuances. It smacks of whole-bunch fermentation. The palate is likewise stylish, understated, ethereal and savoury, with succulence and charm in spadefuls. It makes a definite style statement: a lovely pinot.”

A different expression of Curly Flat Pinot Noir. Inspired by Domaine Dujac who employ high levels of whole bunch along with high levels of new oak.
Bouquet
Moderate lift, brooding with secondary characters of undergrowth, dried flowers and French oak spice all offer savoury support to the layers of red and black fruits, which appear mostly in berry form. Exotic and enticing.
Palate
Medium plus in weight with lively acidity which provide great contrast to the mouthfilling, yet multilayered tannin structure that ranges from fine to firm. Complexing secondary characters again are prevalent, but only to serve as platform for the deep fruited core.
Cellaring
This is a structured Pinot Noir that is destined for a long cellaring life. It will take years to show its full potential but it is starting from a solid foundation. It has a cellaring potential of 20 years.
How is this drinking now?
Date tasted: 12/2/20
Bright med garnet with light brick hues. More savoury earthen core of forested undergrowth leads scents of cedarwood oak spice with mainly black cherry fruit in peripheral support. The initially dark fruited palate merges with the structural trinity of fruit/stem/oak tannin that are still evolving towards resolution. Good weight of nuanced fruit and gently rippling acidity throughout provides great frame and endorses the promise that more time will bring rewards. Drink 2022 – 2030
