White Pinot is Pinot Noir made in a white wine style. Using only the free-run juice from our estate-grown grapes, it’s fermented with wild yeasts and aged in old oak puncheons. The result is a pale, textural wine with subtle red berry notes, a touch of savoury reduction, and a beautifully refreshing finish.
Curly Flat’s White Pinot is a fascinating expression of Pinot Noir, crafted with delicacy and intention. It starts in the vineyard, where a small amount of juice is naturally released from the Pinot Noir grapes during the short journey to the winery. This early juice, known as the free run, is gently collected before it has time to pick up much colour from the skins – resulting in a wine that’s technically red by grape, but white in appearance.
From there, the juice is:
• Fermented with wild (indigenous) yeasts, enhancing complexity and allowing the true character of the fruit and site to shine.
• Aged for 4 – 6 months in old French oak puncheons, which are large, neutral barrels that add texture without dominant oak flavour.
• The combination of stainless steel fermentation and aging in old oak creates a unique balance of freshness and depth, thanks to the interplay of reductive and oxidative environments.
The result? A beautifully pale wine with subtle red berry notes, gentle structure, and a soft, textural mouthfeel. It’s light, expressive, and easy-drinking, with a slight savoury edge that adds intrigue.
In essence, this is Pinot Noir reimagined – made like a white wine, but still carrying the soul of the grape.
