2020 Curly Flat Western Pinot Noir
“Deepish, bright red/purple colour. A very spicy nose, nutmeg and brown spices overlying dried herbs, blackberries emerging in time, the palate rich and full, succulent and satisfying, with glorious depth, concentration and terrific structure that will see it age well. Finer, lighter tannins. Great depth of fruit sweetness and oodles of charm.”
96 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review (May 2022)
“From the coolest site on the Curly Flat estate. 23-year-old vines.
There’s an earthen aspect to this rose-petal-and-red-cherry-accented pinot, and that’s never a bad thing. There’s also a general absence of obvious oak. This is fragrant and expressive, not at all heavy, and lacey in both its feel and in its tannin framework. Persistence here is excellent, as is balance. Complexity has already been covered off but time will do wonders here.”

2020 Curly Flat Central Pinot Noir
Deepish red colour tinged with purple, the bouquet showing char-oak smokiness, graphite, pepper, savoury and slightly roasted fruit nuances, and very attractive. The wine is full and drying in the mouth, with abundant tannins and savouriness. Long carry and a drying aftertaste. A very smart wine in a more savoury and structured style and a brilliant foil for the other 2020 Curly Flat pinots, especially the Western bottling.”
97 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review (April 2022)
“Long chains of tannin, clear-but-powerful varietal fruit, a sense of command and then noteworthy persistence through the finish. This is a high quality wine. Indeed how such power and presence is achieved at 12.8% alcohol is something to marvel at. Undergrowth, twig, sweet-sour cherries, florals and perfectly integrated cedarwood oak flavours are served in a firm, compelling context. Curly Flat is in tremendous form; career-best, quite likely.”

2020 Curly Flat Estate Pinot Noir
“Deep, bright red/purple hue, with a dry spice, pepper and walnut bouquet, balsamic herbs too, savoury and bold, the varietal fruit still a touch suppressed, while the palate is intense and lively, deep and backed up by supportive but not assertive tannins. Black cherry emerged more the longer it was in the glass. A superb wine.”

“The tannin structure of this wine and the overall reach through the finish is elite. It has ample flavour, in varietal terms, but structure is what this wine is all about. It mixes red cherry with satsuma plum, cedar wood with green-ish garden herbs, and while it has a bit of grunt it’s not heavy; it trips along in its own certain way. Hold onto it; don’t rush in; it’s on its way to a lovely place.” 95 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front (May 2022)

About the Curly Flat Central and Western Pinot Noirs
Back in 2018 we were inspired to begin bottling separate snapshots to illustrate the compelling differences found within our vineyard. While these parcels are still part of our estate blend, as small standalone bottlings they help dig deeper into some of the components that compose Curly Flat Pinot Noir.
The two bottlings are called Central & Western; the names representing their vinous location within our estate.
The Central bottling represents the core structure of Curly Flat, while still aromatic is comprised of darker fruits & brooding savoury notes along with a more robust tannin structure. Also, the Central is comprised solely of our oldest vines planted in 1992.
The Western bottling describes the more fragrant and supple expressions from the coldest sites in our vineyard which ripen late to form powerful, yet distinctly elegant Pinot Noir.
Again these blocks are still represented in our Curly Flat estate wine, we think it’s fascinating to both grower and drinker alike to appreciate the singular complexities that go behind the making, or rather, the growing of Curly Flat Pinot Noir.
